Special TATRA trucks – Part 1: 1+3 for farmers

30 September, 2014

The TATRA TRUCKS company launches on their website a new series of articles about TATRA specials developed based on the specific customer requirements. The first part is devoted to the 1+3 special agricultural truck.

At the end of the last year an interesting variant of the TATRA PHOENIX vehicle, designed for agricultural customers was built in the workshops of the Technical Department. The resulting chassis configuration with one front and three rear axles (1+3) was designed with regard to the required length and weight parameters of the future superstructure, with the requirement for as uniform as possible weight distribution and to achieve the smallest turning radius – all of that, of course, in order to ensure the most gentle vehicle behaviour to the soil in the fields. Therefore, two of three rear axles are steerable, by the electro-hydraulic system from the Dutch company VSE, with separate steering cylinders for the third and fourth axles. The first axle features standard, mechanical steering from the Phoenix range.

The vehicle is powered by the standard Paccar MX-13 Euro5 engine with an output of 340 kW. It is coupled to a 6-speed fully automatic Allison 4500 transmission and two-speed TATRA auxiliary transmission (which is usually used in the rest of TATRA vehicles that are equipped with the Allison transmission, i.e. especially for "Australian" variants). The transmission is fitted with pumps pursuant to the superstructure manufacturer’s specification, including complete hydraulic circuit and the tank situated behind the cab.

All axles (with hub reduction gears) are suspended with air bellows, the 1st, 2nd and 4th axle suspensions are complemented with torsion stabilizers. Based on the customer’s request, the steering axles are fitted with the so-called Alliance flotation tires (size 500/60 R22,5) and the second (non-steerable) axle is then fitted with 600/50 R22,5 tires. To achieve the maximum go-anywhere ability on soft ground, this special truck also features the automatic tire inflation system from Saygon.

TATRA PHOENIX in this custom design has a wheelbase 3,700 + 1,450 + 1,500 mm and the total length (without the superstructure) 9,640 mm. The curb weight without the superstructure is 12,780 kg. As the most interesting parameter, the turning circle is 16.5 m (curb to curb) and 18.5 m (contour) respectively, thanks to the design solution applied.
