TATRA PHOENIX – novelties in 2013

12 April, 2013

The range of TATRA PHOENIX heavy trucks regularly brings new design solutions and significant solutions to the automotive market, enabling to continuously meet the concept of strong customer friendliness.

Such news of 2013 mainly include:

Working machine - four-axle vehicles TATRA PHOENIX 8x8 with GVW of 50 t and the payload of 32 tons. The cab is protected according to ROPS/FOPS regulations, features protective grille of headlights and auxiliary lamps. The vehicle is equipped with a hub reduction gear and heated tipping body of tipping building superstructure. Upon request it is possible to equip the working machine with 24 R21 size tires on the rear axles and the central tire inflation system.

TATRA PHOENIX 8x6 four-axle heavy trucks are the world’s new of the Kopřivnice motor works and they offer two basic variants in terms of a drive system on each axle wheel: 8x6 with the first front axle wheel drive (about 250 kg curb weight saving in favor of payload) and 8x6 with the second front axle wheel drive (about 300 kg curb weight saving in favor of payload). In combination with a light combined suspension TATRA King Frame®, the vehicle curb weight in the tipper version is approaching or is entirely comparable with the curb weight of competitor vehicles in 8x4 drive design. Major advantages of this drive design of four-axle TATRA PHOENIX vehicles include savings of diesel fuel consumption of up to 2 liters/100 km!

ZF AS-Tronic automated transmission is available upon request for all types of TATRA PHOENIX heavy trucks since April this year. It is equipped with optional "Off-Road" driving mode, software developed exclusively by Tatra designers based on long-term tests in cooperation with ZF technology. With the automated gearbox ZF AS-Tronic, it is possible to fully use the automatic gear shifting mode or choose the manual mode, which can bring certain advantages, especially when driving in difficult terrain. The automated transmission is complemented with a very practical "Hill holder" feature, ensuring smooth drive-away in a hilly terrain.

New two-speed transfer case - is available on request for all types of TATRA PHOENIX vehicles, available for vehicles equipped with both a manual and automated ZF transmissions. Provides excellent operational efficiency (fuel saving up to 3 l/100 km as compared to the version with one-speed transfer case) and excellent vehicle performance in difficult terrain. The control switch is located on the instrument panel on the RH side within the steering wheel grip. A new two-speed transfer case is standardized with one-speed variants of transfer case.

Single tires on all axles - there are several variants of tire sizes up to 14.00 R20 or 16.00 R20 and 24 R21 for vehicle variants with hub reduction gears.

Lowered cab roof option – lowering the middle cab section by 125 mm in the width of 830 mm for convenient installation of superstructures such as diggers, crane, drill rig and more. The overall height of the TATRA PHOENIX vehicle with standard tires is 3,200 mm, while the lowered central part of the roof is at a height of 3,075 mm.

Four-door dual cab - suitable for transport of work crews at the number of 1+8 people, meets fire regulations for transporting of a firefighter team 1+5 with with enough space for breathing apparatuses.  It is one of the most spatial dual cabs in today's automotive market and is approved for 4x4 driven vehicles. A new firefighting truck TATRA PHOENIX with crew cab will be introduced at international exhibitions IDET/PYROS/ISET 2013 in Brno, May 22 – 24, 2013 at stand of the bodybuilder THT Policka, whou supplied the superstructure for this truck.

TATRA’s competitive advantages

Our competitive advantages include, above all, the following: higher operating productivity, outstanding driver’s and crew’s comfort, design efficiency and manufacturing tradition.

Increased productivity results from a higher payload of 0.5 tons to 1.2 tons compared to competing vehicles.  A high degree of mobility guarantees to operators that the TATRA vehicle will pass through terrains even where competitive vehicles face problems or not pass at all. TATRA vehicles stand out for their ruggedness, and so long-term operation even in the most difficult terrain does not affect their life - simply said, TATRA lasts for more than the competition. Versatility is also important. With the same vehicle (unsurpassed off road), its owner or operator is competitive also on the road, including operating efficiency, operating expenses with the current highly competitive TCO coefficient.

Strong comfort given by the unique properties of the original and long-term proven chassis of the Tatra concept contributes to operational efficiency and reduces the risk of potential accidents. The TATRA vehicles excel, apart from other very accommodating power and deformation conditions in the direction to the installed superstructures, in the possibility of higher lateral tilt when overcoming terrain obstacles, a higher degree of comfort and more space for the driver and crew.

Design efficiency results from the reliability and robustness.  Heavy TATRA trucks offer a lower failure rate and longer life of the whole powertrain. Thanks to the excellent driving characteristics, they offer longer life of superstructures. The powertrain is optimized for optimal performance and engine torque curve.

The tradition of production and vast experience accumulated over more than 160 years of the company’s existence. The design and production of the first car with an internal combustion engine in Austria-Hungary and Central Europe (1897) makes the brand of TATRA. the second oldest manufacturer of automobiles and trucks in the world.  The original chassis design summarized under the name "Tatra chassis concept" is being continuously proven by thousands of trucks delivering unparalleled performance at all possible, even at first sight impossible, terrain, in all world corners for already ninety years.
